Izhar, Munavvar MD Discusses the Benefits of Mindful Eating

Izhar, Munavvar recently discussed the benefits of mindful eating.

Mindfulness is a term that is often used but not often fully understood. The definition of the word is simply the state of being aware of something. However, mindfulness has come to include the concepts of intention, attention, and attitude. Mindfulness has even begun to be studied scientifically, and it has been determined as a significant element of happiness and stress reduction. Munavvar Izhar MD recently discussed the mental and physical benefits of eating mindfully.

"Eating mindfully is a pleasant experience that can result in numerous mental and physical benefits," Munavvar Izhar said. "However, it's a deep practice that must be learned and adhered to."

Munavvar Izhar MD explained that mindful eating could take many forms. It begins with the food shopping process, occurs while eating the food, and becomes a daily routine. As reported by the Harvard Medical School, several studies have shown a significant connection between the mind and the digestive system, also known simply as the "gut." Studies also showed that it takes roughly 20 minutes for the brain to understand that your stomach feels full.

Izhar explained that studies have shown that the gut is linked to the nervous system, so mindful eating can result in less stress and anxiety and an overall improved mood. On the contrary, eating while distracted, such as while driving or working, could be harmful to digestion, causing us to miss some of the food's nutritional value. Even more, distracted eating can result in a lower overall mood or satisfaction.

"Mindful eating has been proven to have countless benefits, from weight loss and easier digestion to reduced stress and improved enjoyment," Dr. Munavvar Izhar said. "Mindful eating allows you to have control over your food intake, instead of your food controlling you."

Munavvar Izhar MD offered a few tips for mindful eating process. He suggested the process starts with shopping smart. Choose fresh, whole foods, and avoid processed ones whenever possible. Anything that has more than 2 lines for ingredient list, do not buy! He also recommended removing all currently processed foods from your home.

"One of the first steps of mindful eating is to eat more slowly. Take time to savor every bit," Munavvar Izhar MD said. "Think of your meal as a wine tasting. Experience the flavors and textures to the fullest."

Izhar stated that it's important to tune out the rest of the world while eating mindfully. Remove all distractions and eat in silence when possible. Focus on tuning into the eating experience, paying attention to the textures, flavors, colors, and meal presentation

"Food is medicine, and learning how to consume it properly can be the difference between a healthy lifestyle and an unhealthy one," Munavvar Izhar MD finished.

"People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years building, others could destroy overnight. Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway"
